The Y Australia announces 2026 Sydney Mardi Gras Parade entry: “Constellations of Us”
Y Australia is proud to confirm its participation in the 2026 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade with its new parade concept, Constellations of Us a cosmic celebration of identity, community and the power of shining brighter together.
The entry honours the joy of chosen families, particularly for young people who may not have support from their biological family. Aled, 18, who will be marching in this year’s parade said, “I think it’s beautiful that The Y is creating comfort and community for queer people that sometimes don’t have a given family to rely on and they have a space here at the Y where they can connect with their chosen family.”
Grounded in the belief that every person, regardless of background, carries their own stardust and light, the theme reflects the Y’s 2026 message, ‘Shining Brighter, Together!’, celebrating the rich diversity, pride and sense of belonging shared by LGBTQIA+ young people, families and communities around the Y.
Taylah, 18, who is also marching this year said, “The Y is an incredible space for young people to find a welcoming group of likeminded people and push ourselves to grow. I am excited to continue my journey at The Y, alongside my found family, in celebration of Sydney Mardi Gras!”
Leading the Y’s 60-person formation is The Celestial Guide – a custom-built float featuring synchronised lighting, effects and music. Onboard and surrounding the float, performers will wear custom “Constellations of Us” costumes with shimmering makeup, and celestial accessories. A feature element, The Living Light, uses fibreoptic garments and repurposed LED rainbow wings from the 2025 float to create a “living, breathing galaxy.
Rainbow Family participants Natalie and Tara Peterson described marching with the Y in 2025 as “a truly special experience,” while Float Marshall and co-founder of the Y’s LGBTQIA+ employee and volunteer queer collective, the Y Affinity Network, Bryan Jader, said, “I’m proud to be an open and out queer role model, empowering the next generation of queer leaders.”
The Y is one of Australia’s largest youth-focused not-for-profit organisations, supporting the wellbeing, inclusion and empowerment of young people nationwide through programs that foster connection, leadership and growth.
Y Australia, Y Hobart, Y NSW and Y Victoria will all be sending participants to the 2026 parade, to give staff, volunteers and community members the opportunity to be themselves and celebrate pride.
Alex Ash, National CEO of the Y Australia, said: “Inclusion and diversity are not optional values at the Y – they’re at the heart of who we are. ‘Constellations of Us’ reflects what we believe deeply: every person carries their own light, and when we come together, we shine brighter”
