THE Y's YOUTH PARLIAMENTS KICK OFF ACROSS AUSTRALIA, EMPOWERING YOUNG VOICES

As Youth Parliaments roll out across the country, the Y celebrates the energy, insight, and leadership of young Australians who are shaping the future. This year, Western Australia, South Australia, and Queensland mark 30 years of Youth Parliament. With New South Wales and Victoria set to celebrate 25 and 40 years respectively in 2026. Programs in the Northern Territory and Tasmania continue to grow, and the ACT will proudly return to the lineup next year – making our Youth Parliament program a truly nation-wide one.

The Y’s flagship Youth Parliament programs bring together over 400 passionate young people aged 15–25 to take part in a transformative experience that places youth voices at the heart of government.

Held annually in each state and territory’s Parliament House, Youth Parliament gives young Australians the opportunity to step into the shoes of elected representatives, re-enacting the full parliamentary process, from drafting bills to debating and voting on them. These bills are then presented to the relevant Minister, offering invaluable insights into the issues that matter most to young people.

This year’s Matter of Public Importance (MPI) chosen by Youth Governors nationwide is women’s healthcare, with a focus on increasing education and awareness, providing free period products in public spaces, reducing stigma, and boosting funding for diagnosis and treatment. The MPI continues to serve as a powerful youth-led platform that influences public, political, and media discourse.

19-year-old NSW Youth Governor and participant Lian Sequeira said Youth Parliament has opened doors she never knew existed.

“One of the most powerful things about Youth Parliament is realising that everyone, no matter where they come from, is driven by a desire to create positive change in their community. I never imagined myself in Parliament, but I’ve always been passionate about helping people. Through a chance meeting with my local MP, Liesl Tesch, I discovered Youth Parliament and decided to give it a go.

What makes this program so special is its diversity. Participants are from all walks of life, from regional and metropolitan areas, from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to recent migrants. We come together, learn from each other, and advocate for the issues that matter most to us. It’s helped me find my voice, and now I want to help other young people feel heard and empowered too.”

Sally Cordina, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Y Australia said Youth Parliament is more than a simulation, it’s a launchpad for future leaders.

“It equips young people with the skills, confidence, and networks to make real change in their communities and beyond.”

Participants undergo leadership and public speaking training at residential camps, where they also research the issues, they’re passionate about. The program is widely recognised as a premier personal and professional development opportunity for young Australians.
